Upper wrapper: 101 Lexham Gardens, London W8 6JN,
Leonard Woolf’s childhood home, c. 1881–94
‘We lived in Kensington in a large house which contained man and wife, nine children, a governess, a nurse and undernurse, a footman, a cook with scullerymaid attached, a parlourmaid, and two if not three housemaids, a dog, a cat, several canaries, two white rats, and a fluctuating number of piebald mice. The resident household consisted therefore of 20 human beings of whom one was a governess and eight were “servants”. … There also came to the house other people to serve our needs: a tutor, who administered education to my brother and myself, and “the man” who cleaned the boots, that peculiarly Victorian institution, came daily; three times a week a governess taught us French and German; [etc.]. Two other persons who ministered to the needs of this Victorian family deserve mention. Every morning before breakfast Mr. Tomkins arrived to shave my father in his dressing-room; and every week on Friday afternoon came Mr. Davies from a neighbouring watch and clockmaker’s shop to wind and regulate all the clocks in the house.’
(Principia Politica: A Study of Communal Psychology, by Leonard Woolf, Hogarth Press, 1953, 30–1)
